ellen_sheltonEllen Shelton, Site Director at the University of Mississippi Writing Project and former high school teacher in Tupelo, Mississippi, reflects on her experiences bringing the first iteration of Letters to the Next President into her classroom in 2008 in this guest blog post for Edutopia. Ellen discusses why she’s excited for Letters to the Next President 2.0 and offers advice on how to create a safe space for political discussion in the classroom by building a “Purple Party” where students focus on language and argument over assessment of which side is “correct.” Shelton also explains why she believes supporting this kind of political discussion in the classroom can have a deep impact on students now and in the future.
